Blood Pressure Treatment Tips

Blood pressure treatment tips have become greatly in demand as more people became aware that high blood pressure has been a leading cause of heart stroke and even death. Here are some blood pressure treatment tips to guide every person who has hypertension.

Some of the treatments to lower blood pressure are however anchored on discipline and determination and without these two you can try every treatment and fail.

Transcendental meditation on blood pressure has been tried on all over the world as it was first learned to have effective results on a hypertensive patient. It is a simple body technique that allows one to acquire a unique state of restful awareness or alertness. Some studies supported that the effect of transcendental meditation through deep rest has brought about biochemical changes that contribute to the body’s balanced state. It is also believed to trigger the body’s own self-repair mechanism.

The treatment is done by the repetition of a word or phrase commonly known as mantra while seated on a comfortable position with eyes closed. It is advised to be practiced for 20 minutes a session, twice a day. TM reduced systolic blood pressure by more than 10 points and diastolic pressure by more than 6 points.

Besides non-drug treatment, hypertensive patients are also advised to reduce their salt diet which can deliberately help control high blood pressure especially in the elderly patients. A study showed that salt intake must be limited to 2,400 mg per day, lesser than this amount would further reduce blood pressure.

The National Heart, Lung, Blood Institute suggested that patients purchase fresh, plain frozen or canned no-salt-added vegetables. Frozen dinners like pizza, packaged mixes, canned soup and salad dressing should also be limited. Instead, opt for fresh poultry, fish, and lean meat rather than processed foods. Also, the use of herbs, spices, and salt-free seasonings are rather advised in cooking and at the table.

In terms of drug-treatment, most people with high blood pressure are advised to start on a thiazide-type diuretic. Thiazide diuretics are proven useful in achieving blood pressure control and effective when used with other antihypertensive medications. This works for patients with stage 2 hypertension and who typically need a two-drug combination that includes a thiazide diuretic along with an ACE Inhibitor, an ARB, a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker.

Diuretics are sometimes called "water pills" because they work in the kidney and flush excess water and sodium from the body. Beta-blockers reduce nerve impulses to the heart and blood vessels. This makes the heart beat slower and with less force. Blood pressure drops and the heart works less hard.

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors prevent the formation of a hormone called angiotensin II, which normally causes blood vessels to narrow. The ACE inhibitors cause the vessels to relax and blood pressure goes down. Calcium channel blockers or CCBs keep calcium from entering the muscle cells of the heart and blood vessels. This causes the blood vessels to relax and pressure goes down.

A hypertensive person can rely on medicines or drugs for his blood pressure treatment but he can also opt for the more natural ways to lower his blood pressure like a lifestyle change which can include regular exercise and a healthy diet.
